Between 2004 and 2019, North Carolina experienced a 22% decrease in newspapers and a 38% drop in newspaper circulation.

By 2019, six counties in North Carolina had no newspapers at all, and 58 counties had only one. This means 64 of the state’s 100 counties (64%) are classified as news deserts when defined as communities with no more than one local news source.
